You know it’s springtime in D.C. when you’re surrounded by an unforgettable sea of pink and white. Cherry Blossom season is my favorite time of year because the weather is perfect- not too hot, a light breeze in the air. The air is crisp and fresh, it’s an absolute utopia. Here’s your ultimate guide to this years’ Cherry Blossom Festival:
The National Cherry Blossom Festival is March 20 – April 15
According to the National Park Service and the National Cherry Blossom Festival, the 2018 cherry blossom peak bloom period is expected to take place from March 27-31.
Mother nature is fickle in the DMV so let’s cross our fingers!
March 20- Festival Night at Cherry Blossom PUB (Pop Up Bar)
Time: 5 pm- 12:30 am
Location: 1843 7th Street NW
Toast to the official first day of Spring! The elaborate decorations and speciality cocktails are the perfect way to kick off the Cherry Blossom Festival. Tickets are $20 and proceeds go to the National Cherry Blossom Festival. There is a 2-hour timed entry per ticket. Purchase tickets here.
March 31- Blossom Kite Festival
Time: 10 am to 4:30 pm
Location: Grounds of the Washington Monument
Watch as expert kite-fliers come from all over the world to participate in a variety of competitions and demonstrations and not to mention the craftsmanship of all the kite makers.
April 7- Petalpalooza
Time: 1 pm- 8:30 pm
Location: The Wharf, D.C.
Formally known as the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks, Petalpalooza this year will be held in D.C.’s hottest new development – The Wharf. The day will be filled with activities for all ages including music entertainment, games, a roller rink, interactive art installations and much more! Not to mention that the night will be topped off with fireworks at the waterfront.
April 13- Newseum Nights: In Bloom
Time: 8 pm – 10:30 pm
Location: Newseum (555 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW)
Admission: Members: $45 – $50; General Admission: $50 – $60; Newseum membership and a FREE ticket to the party- $75 (a $135 value!). Must be 21 years or older to attend (Purchase tickets here).
For the first time this year, Newseum will join in celebrating the Cherry Blossom Festival. From sake samples to an open bar, this night will immerse you in an evening of Japanese culture. Entertainment includes seeing a traditional Japanese drum performance, savoring signature Asian dishes, receiving a personalized haiku, and so much more!
April 14- National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade
Time: 10 am – 12 pm
Location: Constitution Avenue (From 7th Street to 17th Street)
Admission: Grandstand Seating is $20 (Purchase tickets here)
Standing along NW is Free
Don’t forget to arrive early for the best views. From giant colorful helium balloons and elaborate floats to live musical performances, this springtime parade presented by Events D.C. is a grand spectacle only available to see once a year.
April 15- Anacostia River Festival
Time: 1 pm – 5 pm
Location: Anacostia Park
Celebrate the Anacostia River Festival presented by the 11th Street Bridge Park and National Park Services. Activities include hands-on art projects, a bike parade, kayaking and canoeing, lawn games, live music and performances and much more.
